About Harley of Scotland
Harley of Scotland has been making sweaters in the north of Scotland since 1929. What once started as a small family business has grown into a brand renowned worldwide for its craftsmanship. The sweaters are knitted from carefully selected yarns, such as soft lambswool and pure Shetland wool. These natural materials provide warmth, comfort, and longevity. The family spirit is still present in every design: honest, authentic, and made to last for years.
Fair Isle patterns
The famous Fair Isle patterns give Harley of Scotland sweaters their distinctive look. This traditional knitting style originates from the Scottish islands and is recognizable by its geometric motifs and beautiful color combinations.
The knitting is done with precision, ensuring that the patterns flow seamlessly and the sweater looks perfect. A Fair Isle sweater is more than just clothing: it's a piece of heritage that brings together tradition and style. Timeless, striking, and easy to combine with your everyday wardrobe.
Sustainable & Timeless
Harley of Scotland is all about long-lasting quality. The sweaters are knitted locally in Scotland, using wool often spun nearby. Thanks to the seamless knitting technique, hardly any material is wasted, and the sweater feels extra comfortable.
By choosing natural fibres such as lambswool and Shetland wool, you avoid synthetic fabrics and consciously opt for a more sustainable alternative. This is knitwear you'll enjoy wearing, season after season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are your products made from 100% natural materials?
Yes! Our knitwear is made from 100% natural wool, carefully selected for quality, origin, and sustainability. Without synthetic fibers, you'll enjoy the pure softness, warmth, and breathability of wool, ensuring your sweaters and cardigans stay beautiful for a long time.
Is your wool mulesing free?
Mulesing is a procedure performed on sheep that can be painful, and consumers are becoming increasingly aware of it. More and more people are therefore opting for mulesing-free wool.
Our wool is 100% mulesing-free and comes from small-scale European farms where sheep are kept with care. This ensures you receive animal-friendly, fair, and high-quality wool, produced with respect for people, animals, and nature.
Does your knitwear pill?
Our knitwear is made from high-quality A-grade wool yarns with extra-long fibers. Thanks to this quality, pilling is minimal, but it's important to know that natural wool can always pill a little.
Light pilling usually disappears on its own or can be easily removed with a wool comb or de-piller. After 2 to 3 treatments, the surface of the sweater remains beautifully smooth, and pilling becomes less visible or no longer appears.
The difference lies in the quality of the wool yarns:
• A-grade yarns are longer and stronger, making them less prone to pilling, and your sweater will ultimately look good for longer.
• In comparison: C-grade yarns are shorter and often more affordable, but they continue to pill, even after removing the pills.
How do I wash my knitwear?
100% wool has a self-cleaning effect: because it contains lanolin (a natural fat), it acts as a kind of natural soap when it comes into contact with cold air. This means that your sweaters and cardigans often stay clean without washing, which is sustainable and extends the life of your clothes.
If you want to remove strong odors or stains, wash your wool gently by hand in cold water, or use a wool program in the washing machine. Please note: only do this if you are sure that the program is suitable for wool.
Dry your knitwear flat and store it folded, so that the shape is preserved. This way, your sweater or cardigan will stay beautiful and in shape longer!
